Today, your child has brought home an ‘Eat them to defeat them’ mission pack. In this pack is a sticker race chart, stickers and information about the campaign.

 

Eat them to defeat them is a campaign run by Veg Power to encourage children to eat more vegetables and highlight the importance of a healthy diet.

 

From Monday 27^th February to Friday 3^rd March your child will be encouraged to eat as many vegetables as possible to ‘defeat them’.

• At school – Children who eat their vegetables in their school dinner, or part of their packed lunch, will receive a sticker from the lunchtime staff. There are 5 stickers to collect over the week.

 

• At home – Each time your child eats a vegetable, they can put a sticker on their chart. Can they eat 15 portions of vegetables in a week?

 

As we all know, some children do not like eating vegetables and the Veg Power campaign recognises this. They suggest that children are encouraged to smell and/or lick the vegetables first, without the pressure to eat them, if they are reluctant to try new flavours.

Dear Parents,

 

Our Book Fair is fast approaching! It will be arriving after half term on Tuesday 21^st February and children will be able to buy books until Monday 27^th February.  

 

Below, is a timetable of when your child’s class will be visiting the fair. Each class will get two sessions at the Book Fair. The first session is for looking at the books and the second session is an opportunity to buy books.

 

 

 

 

There will be an opportunity after school in the dining room, on Thursday 23^rd February for years 3 and 4 and on Friday 24^th February for years 5 and 6, to purchase books. This will run from 3.20p.m. until 4.00 p.m.

The Book Fair will be arriving after half term on Tuesday 21^st February and is being collected on Tuesday 28^th February. There are over 200 titles for you and your child to choose from, and with prices starting from only £2.99, there’s sure to be a book for everyone. Every book sold helps to get free books for our school library.

 

You can pay for the books easily at the Book Fair using cash, cheques or using an online payment link when you attend the fair. Spotlight UK's Show a Little Love Campaign

Spotlight UK is a Basingstoke charity that provides support to children and young people to reach their full potential.  They are about to launch this year's "Show a Little Love Campaign".

 

Mental health is an issue that affects many people. Latest estimates state that 1 in 6 adults experienced a ‘common mental disorder’ such as depression or anxiety in the past week and 1 in 6 children aged between 6 and 16 experienced a ‘common mental disorder’ in 2021.

 

Spotlight UK works with all children and young people and their families. It becomes the safety net when things do not go according to plan.  This might be when a child starts to develop mental health issues or is affected by domestic abuse.  It may be when a child experiences loss or separation or when a child becomes a young carer.  It could be when a child's family experiences poverty. It might be when a child, parent or sibling is impacted by terminal illness or long term illness.

 

The Show a Little Love Campaign provides mental health care packs for children and parents that contain items such as bubble baths, face masks, candles, shower gels, nail varnish for adults and colouring books and toys for children. The packs are aimed at improving mental well-being by enabling them to self-soothe and relax.

 

To raise money for Spotlight’s Show a Little Love Campaign, we are having a ‘PURPLE’ day at The South View Federation.  On Friday 10^th February, please dress in purple.  All we ask for is a donation of 50p per child to donate to Spotlight UK to help towards their fantastic mental health support.

Dear Parents and Carers,

 

As you may be aware, in recent weeks the National Education Union (NEU), National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) and National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) all balloted their members on industrial action. I am writing to you today to explain what this means for our federation.

 

Following a ballot, the NEU has confirmed that its members will be striking with national strikes scheduled to take place on 1 February, and 15 and 16 March, with a local strike for the South East on 2 March. This is likely to affect the running of the Federation at some point.

 

Although staff are not obliged to inform me whether they are intending to strike, the staff have been considerate of the fact that plans need to be made, and so have shared their intentions with me. Having assessed the staffing situation, I can now confirm that on Wednesday 1^st February:

• The junior school will be open as usual, including breakfast club and afterschool clubs.
• At the infant school I can confirm that nursery and year 2 will be open, as well as Hedgehog and Butterfly Classes. Breakfast club, and after school clubs will also be available to those year groups attending. Years R and 1 will be closed for the day: that means children from Owl, Badger, Mole and Rabbit classes should not attend school on Wednesday 1^st February.
• Children in years R and 1 who are entitled to FSM (those of you who are eligible due to being on Universal credit for example) will be able to collect a picnic lunch from reception between 11.30 and 12.30 on Wednesday. To order your child’s packed lunch please follow this link and complete the form by the end of Monday 30^th January.

 

 The safety and wellbeing of our pupils is critical and so I am sure you will understand that I have not taken this decision lightly but I will not have enough teaching staff available to run classes safely.

 

 Whilst we are giving you early notice about this, it is still possible that arrangements will change further, potentially even on the strike day itself, given the nature of industrial action. However, I will of course endeavour to keep you as informed as possible. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to me or a member of my senior leadership team.
