Considering the new allergy safety requirements introduced under Benedict's Law and after assessing the risks within our school community, we have decided not to allow products containing nuts as a listed ingredient in school. Examples include – Nutella and other chocolate spread products, peanut butter, chocolate bars, nut oils and granola bars. Benedict’s Law does not require us to do this. However, we have reviewed the risks and taken into consideration the children with known allergies, the fact that some children will have unknown allergies, the age of the children and the needs of the children across the Federation. We feel that by not having nut products in school, we will significantly reduce the risk and keep everyone safe. The situation will constantly be under review, and if new cases come to light, we may need to add other food items/ingredients to the list. You may be aware that several schools are already ‘nut free’ schools.

 

Products that state ‘may contain nuts/traces of nuts’ or ‘were produced in a factory that uses nuts’ are still allowed in school.

As a school we will continue to teach all children how to keep themselves safe and manage their own allergies, as this is something that they need to learn to do.
