Infant School Sports Day

Start: 09:15am       Ends: 11:30 am roughly

 

We are very excited to be able to invite you to attend the Infant School Sports Day!

 

Each year group will have their own zone on the field where they will be competing.

 

Year R are in the red/white zone on the Infant field.

 

Key Stage 1 will be on the Junior school side of the field, Year 1 in the yellow/black zone and Year 2 in the blue/white zone.

 

Please stay within the marked parent zone to allow the children to show off what they have been practising.

 

Please remember your child will need to wear their full PE kit and if it is sunny please apply sun cream to your child prior to coming to school.

Did you know:

• 51% of UK 11-13 year olds have seen pornography, mostly unintentionally (evidence)
• 73% of parents say excessive smartphone-use is a source of family conflict (evidence)
• Among children aged 8-17 who are bullied, eight in ten experience it through a device (evidence)

As primary school headteachers in Basingstoke, we're concerned about these statistics, and want to support parents in these challenges.

 

We would therefore encourage every parent in Basingstoke to attend the webinar below, irrespective of your child's age.

 

What's it all about?

• We know that parenting in the digital age has never been more complex, with issues surrounding screen time, social media use and gaming.
• Many parents are concerned about the harmful content that can be accessed and their children’s mental health and wellbeing. 
• A lot more is known now about the impact of smartphones, but sometimes parents are just not aware.

So, if you....

• have children who haven't yet hit the smartphone age yet, but want to learn about the impact of them and also learn how to avoid future issues, or,
• have children who have a smartphone but you are concerned about the impact it has on their development and wellbeing, or
• feel alone in wanting to place restrictions on technology of delay giving them a smartphone, but feel unable to because giving your child a phone or playing online games is "what everybody does"...

...then please attend our free, online webinar where we will:

• Share statistics and research around technology and the impact on children's childhoods and mental health, and also what they can access.
• Empower you to be able to make choices and set boundaries both now and in the future.
• Talk through exactly what the Parent Pact is from "Smartphone Free Childhood"

Please note that the webinars have been organised by the headteachers of Basingstoke Primary Schools, and will be run by the charity Papaya - the real experts in this area. This is a fantastic opportunity not to be missed.

Dear Parents,

The Scholastic Book Fair will be arriving after half term on Tuesday 3^rd June and will be with us for a week. Last year, due to your amazing support, we raised over £900 commission to spend on books for our school library and classrooms. This year, there is a 3 for 2 offer on books where you can get the cheapest book free! To assist with the rise in the cost of living, there are a range of books that can be purchased for under £5. We are also running a competition where winners will receive a voucher to spend at the fair.

You can pay for the books easily at the Book Fair using cash, card or using an online payment link when you attend the fair.  There will be an opportunity after school in the dining room, on Thursday 5^th June for years 3 and 4 and on Friday 6^th June for years 5 and 6, to purchase books.

Below, is a timetable of when your child’s class will be visiting the fair. Each class will get two sessions at the Book Fair. The first session is for looking at the books and the second session is an opportunity to buy books.

Stubbington Study Centre next academic year

Stubbington letters have gone home with all Year 5 pupils to register their interest in attending the residential.  If your child did not receive a letter, please collect one from the junior office.

 

 

Dear Parent/Carer,

 

As part of the learning from the history curriculum, the whole federation will be taking part celebrating the 80^th anniversary of VE day. As part of the day, the children will participate in an assembly to learn about the significance of VE day.

 

To help us to celebrate VE day, we are inviting the children to come to school on Thursday 8^th May dressed in red, white and blue. This could be a combination of all colours or just one. The school staff will also be taking part, wearing their most patriotic outfits. 

 

The kitchen will also be hosting a special themed lunch with meals linked to those people would have eaten during the war.

 

The options are:

• Meat (red) option - Cottage pie with vegetables.
• Vegetarian (green) - Vegetarian sausage puff with vegetables and roast potatoes.
• Picnic (yellow) option - Jam finger roll, a cheese straw, carrot sticks, apple wedges and an oat biscuit.

 

Meals will be followed by a choice of syrup sponge pudding or an oat biscuit for dessert.

 

The VE Day lunch will be £3.20 for junior school children and nursery school children.  It will be free to infant school children and junior pupils in receipt of FSM.

 

You can select your child's lunch choice for our VE Commemoration Day, (including if your child will be bringing their own packed lunch) by clicking on the relevant link below. 

All choices need to be made by 3 p.m. on  Friday 2nd May.

This can be paid via ScoPay or by sending £2.50 in a named envelope to your child's class teacher.

Please find below inspiration for easy, fun family days out at National Trust’s The Vyne in Hampshire during the Easter and May half-term school holidays. A former Tudor palace turned 17^th-century family home, The Vyne is located in Sherborne St John, just outside of Basingstoke.

 

There is a free community minibus running between Basingstoke Train Station and The Vyne on select dates. Read on for more information.

 

Easter egg hunt at The Vyne

Saturday 29 March – Monday 21 April, 10am-3pm

Families can enjoy Bunny Hoopla, giant chess, croquet, dominoes and more Regency-themed fun in The Vyne's gardens before collecting their chocolate egg at the end. 

 

This is £3.50 per trail sheet and chocolate egg and includes an Easter trail sheet, bunny ears and dairy or vegan and Free From* chocolate egg (*Suitable for people with milk, egg, gluten, peanut and tree nut allergies). Normal admission applies.

 

Little People, BIG DREAMS® at The Vyne

Saturday 3 May – Sunday 22 June, 10am-4pm:

Lively games and pioneering fun will encourage kids to ‘be bold, be brave’ and ‘dream big’ in The Vyne’s house and gardens where young readers can look out for vibrant illustrations from this best-selling biography series for kids by Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara.

 

On this literary trail, discover remarkable true stories about inspiring people. In the gardens, try your hand at kangaroo pouch bean bag toss with Steve Irwin and ‘jam’ with Taylor Swift in the Summerhouse. Keep an eagle eye out with David Attenborough using binoculars at the bird hide and throw your own mini-theatre production with Hans Christian Andersen.

 

Join Jane Austen in the house before browsing the shop for copies of these much-loved books. Gardens open 10am-5pm. House open 11am-3pm. Last entry 4pm. Free event, normal admission applies.  

 

Vyne Line | Basingstoke community minibus

11am depart Basingstoke train station | 11.20am arrive The Vyne | 3pm depart The Vyne car park | 3.30pm arrive Basingstoke train station.

 

This is a free shuttle service with the minibus kindly provided by Basingstoke Community Transport. Pre-booking your space on the minibus is essential. You can do this online at nationaltrust.org.uk/the-vyne or by phoning 03442 491 895. Please arrive 10 minutes before the departure time as this is when the bus will leave. Normal admission to The Vyne applies.

 

Accessibility information

There is lift access at the back of the bus and low step access at the front. For very young children, you'll need to bring a car seat with you. Please tell us if you're bringing a car seat when you book. The minibus can accommodate one stroller or wheelchair per journey. We need to know if you'll be bringing either of these in advance of the trip so we can prepare the minibus.

This year, World Book Day falls on Thursday 6^th March. World Book Day is a day set aside every year to celebrate reading, books, authors and illustrators. World Book Day celebrates the joy and value of books and reading, especially for children. To help get them started on their reading journey, every child receives a £1 World Book Day Book Token that can either be exchanged for one of the ten special £1 World Book Day books or used to get £1 off any book costing £2.99 or more. You can find out more about the books and ideas on how to share books at home at worldbookday.com/books. Your child will be bringing their voucher home on Thursday 13^th February to ensure they get the book they want!

 

The theme this year is ‘Read Your Way’ and being able to read for pleasure. Therefore, we are giving children the opportunity to come to school dressed as a character or a person from a book that they enjoy reading. They could be a cat or an animal from their favourite fictional story, a footballer from a non-fiction text or a scientist if they love learning about science and the world! The possibilities are endless. Please do not feel that you have to buy something new; we don't want anyone to incur any additional costs in putting together their outfits.

 

For this year’s competition, we are challenging children to design a potato book character. Simply use a potato and turn it into a character of your choice. Be as creative as you can! All entries must be given to your child’s class teacher by Wednesday 5^th March. Good luck!
