Year 6 Parents - Instrumental/vocal learning
Fri 13 Feb 2026Dear Year 6 Parents,
Year 7 Transition - Instrumental/vocal learning
Hampshire Music Service is keen to support children's transition to secondary school and to encourage their continued musical development. The Music Service are therefore asking all Year 6 parents to complete an online form requesting information regarding intentions for instrumental/vocal learning in Year 7.
The form will facilitate communication between you and your child's first choice secondary school, to enable a smooth transition from Year 6 to Year 7.
Please use the form to register your interest in your child receiving instrumental or vocal lessons at secondary school. Once submitted, the Head of Music at your child’s chosen secondary school will contact you to share more information and discuss arrangements for instrumental/vocal lessons in Year 7.
This form is simple and quick to complete. The deadline to complete this form is Friday 13th February 2026.
Link to online form: Year 6 to 7 instrumental/vocal tuition – Fill in form
Please note: Completing this form does not commit you to booking instrumental/vocal lessons at this stage. It simply enables the school to get in touch and provide further information regarding music lessons and musical opportunities at secondary school.
Thank you for your support.

Infants - Scholastic Book Fair
Fri 13 Feb 2026Dear Parents and Carers,
We are pleased to let you know that the Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to school soon.
The Book Fair will be open for parents and children to browse and purchase books at South View Infant School on Thursday 12th February and Friday 13th February from 3:20pm – 4:00pm. During the days leading up to the Book Fair, each class will visit so that children have the opportunity to see the range of books available and start thinking about any they may wish to purchase.
To coincide with this, World Book Day vouchers will be sent home on Thursday 12th February. These vouchers can be used as a £1 discount towards any book at the Book Fair.
Payment can be made by card, however please note that, as in previous years, payments are not processed through Apple Pay, so please ensure you have your card details to hand.
The Book Fair is a lovely opportunity to share books together and support reading for pleasure. Every purchase also helps us to earn free books for school.
Thank you for your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Grinham & Mrs Boseley

SVF Fundraising Event 2026
Fri 13 Feb 2026Dear Parents and Carers,
We are pleased to let you know that we will be holding a non-school uniform day on Friday 13th February to help raise money for our school libraries across the federation.
On Friday 13th February, children are invited to come into school wearing their own clothes instead of school uniform. We kindly ask for a voluntary donation in return. All money raised will go directly towards improving our school libraries, helping us to create an even more inviting reading space for the children and adults to use.
2026 is the National Year of Reading. The National Year of Reading is a celebration of reading for pleasure and the important role it plays in children’s learning, imagination, and wellbeing. Throughout the year, we will be encouraging children to discover the joy of books, stories, poems, and non-fiction in all their wonderful forms.
As always, please ensure that children wear clothes and footwear suitable for a normal school day, including outdoor play and learning.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us promote a love of reading across our school. We really appreciate your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
Miss Sheldon & Mr Grinham

NSPCC Number Day 2026 – Measuring Me
Fri 06 Feb 2026Dear Parents
NSPCC Number Day 2026 – Measuring Me
We are delighted that The South View Federation will be taking part in NSPCC Number Day on Friday 6th February 2026.
The theme for this year is ‘Real Life Measures’. There will be fun based maths challenges all about measures. These will based on the book ‘Measuring Me’ by Nicola Kent.
Number Day is a great way to make maths fun and bring a positive, “can-do” attitude towards it. As part of the fun, pupils are invited to dress up representing a number, a unit of measure or a measuring device.
We look forward to seeing the children dressed up.
Yours sincerely

Year 4 ONLY - Multiplication Tables Check 2026
Fri 23 Jan 2026Dear Parents
You may be aware, that in June 2026, there is a check for year 4 children called the “Multiplication Tables Check” introduced by the DfE. On our website is an ‘Information for Parents’ booklet and here is what you need to know:
Under the national curriculum, primary school children are expected to know all of their times tables up to 12 x12 by the end of Year 4. We have been preparing students to know their times tables by the end of year 4 for quite some time now. However, any additional practice at home will, of course, benefit your child.
The check itself
- Will take place between 1st June and 12th June.
- Is done online, in school, using a computer or tablet.
- Can be done one student at a time, in groups or as a class.
- Will feature 25 questions and children will have 6 seconds to answer each question.
- There is no problem solving or division - just simple “3 x 4 = ?” type questions.
Practice at home
Because maths is such a big subject, and we will of course continue to teach the full curriculum, we will need your continued support to help practise the times tables with your children. Some easy ways to do this include:
- Asking questions such as “What’s 7 x 8?”
- Reciting times tables by rote (4 times 1 is 4, 4 times 2 is 8, etc).
- Using apps and games. All children have access to MathsShed (by using their Spelling Shed login) and MathsFrame via the South View Junior School Apps page. There are activities on these sites that almost exactly mirror the 'Multiplication Tables Check'.
- Singing times tables songs - there are plenty available online.
Why do we learn the times tables?
Times tables are a vital life skill. In primary school, times tables knowledge is important for quick mental maths calculations and problem solving, as well as for many of the topics children learn in years 5 and 6 (division, fractions, percentages etc).
If you have any further questions about the multiplication tables check then please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely

Adverse Weather
Mon 05 Jan 2026With the weather set to get colder over the coming weeks, we feel it is important to remind everyone of the procedure should we be unable to open due to adverse weather such as heavy snow.
If you feel the weather conditions are unsuitable to travel in and are unsure as to whether school is open, please note the following steps will be taken as soon as possible:
- As soon as a decision is made to close, a message will be placed on the front page of our school website www.southview-fed.hants.sch.uk
- A text message will then be sent to the mobile phone number you provided via our school text message service.
- Local radio stations and the Basingstoke Gazette will be notified of our closure through the Hampshire County Council Website
We will endeavour to clear the school site in both icy and snowy conditions, however please appreciate that some gates and pathways will not be opened until they have been gritted and made as safe as possible. The main gate will be the priority entrance to be cleared and gritted.
Should we be unable to open the side gates, we will put a notice on them advising of the closest gate open.

Chartwells - New School Caterers
Thu 01 Jan 2026Dear Parents and Carers,
As from next term our catering company will be changing from Education Caterers (HC3S) to Chartwells. The result of this change is that school meals will now be offered at a lower price of £2.75 per day rather than the current £3.20.
Chartwells are currently working with the kitchen staff to prepare for the changes in January and they have sent through their current menu for you to see, which is uploaded onto the website too. As soon as the new menu is out we will upload it and let you know.
You can see from Chartwells newsletter that they are providing a lot of reassurances regarding the quality of the food and nutritional standards are all being met.
Please take the time to look at their newsletter and the menus, any further updates will be included on this web page when available. Please click here to go to our Chartwell webpage.
Best wishes,
Mrs Pape
