SVJ Sports Day Weds 29th June
Wed 22 Jun 2022Dear Parents,
Great news! The Junior School Sports Day is on Wednesday 29th June.
On Wednesday morning, we are having the usual relay races on the field. Your child will be in their house point team in their class. They will do each relay race, as part of their team, and you are welcome to follow your child around the field as they do these activities. This will start at 10am and should finish by 11 a.m.
In the afternoon, we will have races on the field and it will be in two parts. Lower school (Year 3 and Year 4) will start their Sports Day events at 1:15pm and finish at 2pm. Upper school (Year 5 and Year 6) will then come out and start their Sports Day events at 2:15pm - finishing at 3pm.
If your child is in lower school, please arrive ready for a 1:15pm start. You are then welcome to leave when lower school have finished their races. If your child is in upper school, you should arrive ready for a 2:15pm start. If you have children in upper and lower school, you are welcome for both. All children will be expected to return to class and will be sent home at 3:20pm as usual.
Obviously, your child will need their PE kit for the whole day and they may wear a T-shirt in their house colour.
If it is raining on the Wednesday morning then Sports Day will be called off as the ground will be too slippery to sprint on. We will put a notification on the school website.

Year 2 Transition.- Tuesday 14th June
Wed 08 Jun 2022Dear Parents,
As you will be aware, your child has been offered a year 3 place at South View Junior School for September 2022 and I am delighted to say that once again we are able to offer some transition visits for you to visit the school and ask any questions you may have.
I am very aware that a lot of parents already have siblings at the junior school and so know the school well, however, we will be offering a brief introduction to the school, (about 30 minutes) in the school hall, which will include a walk through the school.
If you would like to attend one of these brief induction tours, then please book via the infant school office. Please note these visits are for parents only, the children will have their own visits.
The times available are:
Tuesday 14th June at 9.30a.m; 11a.m or 1.30p.m.
You will be able to collect your child’s induction pack during your visit or from the JUNIOR school office at any time after Monday 20th June 2022.
A letter confirming their new class will be included in their end of year report but as we want to start some transition work for the children sooner than that, a text will be sent on Wednesday 22nd June to the phone number we hold for the ‘number one contact’, informing you of your child’s class for next year.
If you haven’t received a text by 3p.m. on that date then you will need to phone the infant school to check your contact details are up to date and we can then let you know which class your child is in.
Please note that we are not able to inform you of other children in their class due to data protection laws.
Best wishes
Mrs S Pape
Executive Headteacher

Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check
Tue 10 May 2022Dear Parents
You will be aware, from my letter in December, that in June 2022 there is a check for year 4 children called the “Multiplication Tables Check” introduced by the DfE. The link to the ‘Information for Parents’ booklet is below:
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1031901/2022_Information_for_parents_Multiplication_tables_check.pdf
Here is a reminder of what you need to know:
Under the national curriculum, primary school children are expected to know all of their times tables, up to 12 x12, by the end of Year 4.
The check itself
· Will take place between 6th June and 24th June.
· Is done online, in school, using a computer or tablet.
· Will be completed in groups
· Will feature 25 questions and children will have 6 seconds to answer each question.
· There is no problem solving or division - just simple “3 x 4 = ?” type questions.
Practise at home
We have been preparing students to know their times tables, by the end of year 4, for quite some time now. However, all children benefit from practising their times tables further at home. Some easy ways to do this include:
· Answering quick-fire questions such as “What’s 7 x 8?”
· Reciting times tables by rote (1 times 4 is 4, 2 times 4 is 8, etc).
· Singing times tables songs - there are plenty available online.
· Using apps and games. All children have access to MathsShed (by using their Spelling Shed login) and MathsFrame via the South View Junior School Apps page. There are activities on these sites that almost exactly mirror the 'Multiplication Tables Check'. I have listed other sites below:
https://www.timestables.co.uk/multiplication-tables-check/ https://urbrainy.com/mtc https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/multiplication-tables-check-practice-tg-ga-190
Why do we learn the times tables?
Times tables are a vital life skill. In primary school, times tables knowledge is important for quick mental maths calculations and problem solving, as well as for many of the topics children learn in years 5 and 6 (division, fractions, percentages etc).
If you have any further questions about the multiplication tables check then please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely
Mrs K Young

Update on COVID-19 vaccinations for 5 to 11 and 12 to 15 year olds
Tue 03 May 2022Update on COVID-19 vaccinations for 5 to 11 and 12 to 15 year olds
The in-school COVID-19 vaccination programme ended on Friday 1 April. 12 to 15 year olds are still able to access the vaccine outside of schools at a vaccination centre, pharmacy or walk-in centre.
Further information on this can be found in our new Education Hub blog post.
Healthy 5 to 11 year olds are also now being offered vaccinations outside of schools in vaccination centres, pharmacies, GPs and walk-in centres.
It remains important that those most at risk from COVID-19 are protected with vaccinations. For more information, we have updated our blog on vaccinations for clinically vulnerable children and young people.
For all 5 to 11 and 12 to 15 year old vaccinations, please signpost parents to where they can book COVID-19 vaccination appointments online for an appointment at a vaccination centre or pharmacy, or find a walk-in COVID-19 vaccination site, to get vaccinated without needing an appointment. Parents should also have received a letter from the NHS with more information about how to get their child vaccinated.
